Reader Art contest WINNER in "GameInformer" magazine (April 2008) pg 13

---------------------------------

This is from the masterpiece and cult classic of the gaming world, "Ico" for the PlayStation2. Pretty much anyone that played it agrees that there was nothing quite as magical or that managed to make you actually care like Ico did. I found out about the game through a demo disc (PlayStation Underground JAMPACK - Summer 2001) that I bought for a Soul Reaver 2 pre-release demo. While the Soul Reaver 2 demo was a bit disappointing, this game Ico was amazing and sure enough, I picked it up on release day. If it wasn't for that demo, I would have been one of those people reading "Top 100" and "Best Games You Never Played" lists wondering what the big deal was.

I've wanted to do a fanart pic for quite a while but never had a concept that really worked. I wanted something other than just a stationary Ico and Yorda (the girl you help along the way and whose hand is in the drawing). For me personally, some of the most intense moments were when Yorda was taken away and carried into the black pools. Most times I was right there, but sometimes I was taken off guard and only managed to save her at the last possible moment. Thats what this image is supposed to convey. That sense of panic and desperation as you run like hell to make it to her in time.

I love how this one turned out. I wanted the colors to be very close to the game and intensionally refrained from "single pixel" detailing. I think the little bit of "painted" look fits the style of the game. I hope you enjoy the image. Much love to Fumito Ueda (the designer and director of Ico), Sony for publishing it, and you guys for checking out my fan art for it.

...And by complete coincidence, I have 999 pageviews at this very moment ... so heres to 1000 =P

EDIT: Done in GIMP 2.2 and 2.4 using the standard circle paintbrush tool. Only exceptions are smudge in a few places, the lasso to correct some sizing/angles, and the text and pen to sign my name.

I find myself smiling at how well you've made the littlest of details resemble the game. I'm finding myself drawn to Ico's expression and the veins on Yorda's hand..very well done in regards to both. Haunting, yet very lovely job

Just started playing this on the PS3. It's awesome, isn't it?
One thing I wanted to know, since I just started playing it: Is Ico speaking Japanese in the game or is that a made up language like Yorda's?
Also, one more for you. Are you a fan of art games and do you have any recommendations?

They are both fictional languages. I'm not sure if by art games you mean games like Rez and Limbo or if you mean something else.

Sure, Limbo and Rez. Also stuff like anything by Hideo Kojima or Suda51. If you check Wikipedia, there's an article dedicated to the subject. But maybe 'art' games is a bit vague, especially since the definition of art varies from person to person.

How about this: What would be your favorite games in general and why do you like them?

Games with responsive controls, minimal HUD, minimal talking, or options to set the game that way, great music, likeable characters or vehicles etc. I don't care about number of characters, number of tracks, number of hours. It just has to be fun. I still play games like Sega Rally which has 2 cars and 4 tracks if you count the bonus. THAT'S IT. But it's still fun. I'm not a fan or turn-based games, RTS's, MMO's, Sports, etc. Nothing against them, I just don't care about grinding, taking turns (unless it's a boardgame), or managing numbers or multiple characters. Stats and HP and all that gets me down. Feels too much like work. I can watch them, but I just don't enjoy playing them. I prefer games with instant feedback like fighting, racing, and adventure mostly. Some key fighting games would be SoulCalibur 1 and 2 (I hate IV with a passion for it's controls and mechanics), Killer Instinct (arcade), Street Fighter II (World Warrior, Champion Edition, Hyper Fighting (Not SUPER- Hate the redone voices and sound effects), Mortal Kombat 1 2 and 2011. Also a fan of some lesser known/popular games like Mace: The Dark Age and Star Gladiator. Racing would be games like Daytona USA, Wipeout XL, Need for Speed III (PSX), SplitSecond. Stuff from original Super Mario Kart to Forza. Adventure games would be Soul Reaver 1, Banjo Kazooie, Donkey Kong Country, Panzer Dragoon, Tomb Raider, Super Castlevania IV etc. I love Splinter Cell, PT, CT, and DA. I can't stand SC Conviction which failed the minimal talking test or option to mute voices along with removing most of the moves and options that previous games had. I don't like games that are overly easy or force tutorials or onscreen prompts like "PRESS X TO RELOAD". I own 400-500 games by now so I like many types but in general just games that feel good to play.

Cool. I'm glad to see you have a variety of tastes when it comes to games. Also, I'm glad to see that even with genres you don't care for, you give out good reasons instead of just flaming on them.
That and your art is cool.
Because of that, you are now watched. ^-^

I'm not very far in the game (and I shouldn't be searching Ico for fear of spoilers) but this is awesome!

Thank you. I don't think ICO really has many things that could be spoiled. I would avoid Shadow of the Colossus pics though until you've beat that if you haven't already.
